Mary A. Burns MD, FACOG
Dr. Mary Antoinette Burns has had the privilege of practicing Obstetrics and Gynecology in Hampton Roads since 1995. She graduated from St. George's University, School of Medicine, with honors in 1990. Then she completed her internship and residency, including Chief Residency, in OB/GYN in Seton Hall University, New Jersey. Afterwards, she was fellowship trained in Urogynecology at Wayne State University, Michigan. Urogynecology is a subdivion of Ob/Gyn specializing in treating women with pelvic floor disorders such as urinary or fecal incontinence and prolapse (bulging) of the vagina, bladder and/or the uterus. |
| |
| As a wife and mother of two children, Dr. Burns enjoys her free time. Being a part of an excellent team of healthcare providers allows her freedom to pursue her interests such as music, camping and church ministries. |
| |
| As a gynecologic surgeon, her areas of surgical interest range from minimally invasive procedures, such as laparoscopy, to major reconstructive restoration of pelvic floor disorders. Areas of interest in the office setting range from contraceptive issues to peri/menopausal issues, STD prevention to precancerous conditions of the female organs. |
| |
| However, her passion and extensive training is in the treatment of urinary incontinence. Over 50 million American women suffer from this condition. Unfortunately, less than half will seek treatment. There are various excellent treatment options available - both surgical and nonsurgical. Dr. Burns is a referral source for many family doctors and gynecologists in the Tidewater area as well as North Carolina. Educating women that this is a treatable condition is her professional goal! |
