Who is a UROGYNECOLOGIST?

What does UROGYNECOLOGY mean?

The field of Obstetrics and Gynecology has a new subspecialty called Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery.  The prior name for this field was UROGYNECOLOGY.  This is a science dedicated to the study and treatment of pelvic floor disorders in women.

A UROGYNECOLOGIST is one who has completed medical school and a four year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology or Urology.  These doctors then receive specialized additional training and experience in treatment of surgical and non-surgical treatment of non-cancerous gynecological conditions that affect the female pelvic organs, and the muscles and connective tissue that support the pelvic organs.  Urogynecologists also contribute to research in these areas.

Many of our physicians are trained to do the initial evaluation and treat urologic problems.  Some physicians complete additional training in accredited fellowship programs specifically in the subspecialty of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS).  In fact, Virginia Beach Obstetrics and Gynecology is proud to boast that Dr. Mary Burns was Hampton Roads' first fellowship-trained subspecialist in Urogynecology.
