Then she completed her internship and residency, including Chief Residency, in OB/GYN in Seton Hall University, New Jersey.   Dr. Burns completed her OBGYN fellowship training in Urogynecology/Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at Wayne State University. This is specialized training in treating disorders of the genitourinary  system such as urinary incontinence, Interstitial Cystitis, and prolapse (bulging) of the vagina, bladder and/or the uterus.  She is board certified in the subspecialty of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery.  She has had extensive experience in surgery, cystoscopy, and urodynamics.

Being part of an excellent healthcare team, allows Dr. Burns freedom to enjoy her free time.  Dr. Burns is married to Dr. Matthew Mitsch, and she is a mother of two adult children.  She enjoys traveling and being with her family and golden retriever.

As a gynecologic surgeon, her areas of surgical interest range from minimally invasive procedures, such as laparoscopy, to major reconstructive restoration of pelvic floor disorders. Areas of interest in the office setting range from contraceptive issues to peri/menopausal issues, STD prevention to precancerous conditions of the female organs.

However, her passion and extensive training is in the treatment of urinary incontinence. Over 50 million American women suffer from this condition. Unfortunately, less than half will seek treatment. There are various excellent treatment options available – both surgical and nonsurgical. Dr. Burns is a referral source for many family doctors and gynecologists in the Tidewater area as well as North Carolina. Educating women that this is a treatable condition is her professional goal!
